Recycling – An Easy Way to Make Some Extra Cash

If you look closely, you’ll see that some say 5 cents, and others, like Michigan, say 10 cents. If you don’t live in one of those states, you may have never realized that those numbers represent the money you can receive by recycling those containers at select depositories.

5 cents might not seem like a lot, but if you save all your bottles and cans, instead of throwing them away, you can earn yourself a nice little payday every few weeks – just for helping out the environment.

For example, if you have 500 eligible recyclables in New York (which is not a difficult feat, especially if you have a family), you could get a quick $25 in your pocket.

Here are some quick, easy steps to getting paid by recycling.

1. Look for the recycling comments on the label.
These days, most plastic bottles and aluminum cans you get at the store can be recycled for money. This can include juices, soda, beer, etc. Before you save any empty bottles, be sure to check the label first. If it doesn’t list anything about states or 5-cent deposits, it might not be eligible.

2. Save your bottles for recycling later.
Keep a separate bin or trash bag for recyclables. You don’t need to recycle a bottle immediately after it’s empty. Simply put it aside and wait until you have a full container of recyclables before taking them to a depository.

3. Find out where your local depository is.
Keep in mind, not every state offers money for your recyclables. Check the label on the side of your bottles. If your state is listed, your local grocery store probably has a self-service machine that will accept your bottles and cans. You can also check with your local government office to find out where the closest depositories are. If your state is not listed on the bottle, this means you will probably need to take your bottles to another state, if you want to get cash for them. However, just because you can’t get money for your bottles in-state doesn’t mean you can’t still recycle them locally!

4. Get paid.
Take your bottles to the depository, where you will probably be paid in cash from an automated machine, or from a teller.

5. Increase your earnings by collecting other people’s bottles too.
You don’t have to go digging through other people’s trash to start a profitable recycling business. However, you can offer a courteous service to friends and family by offering to get rid of their recycling for them. This is usually a great benefit to people who might not have the time to take the recyclables themselves. And for you, it’s a great way to easily increase your recyclables and the cash you receive, week after week.
