"Instant profits" - Painting house numbers

Set rules for having house numbers are few and far between. An easy standby to earn a daily income is to paint house numbers on curbs in residential areas. This is a business that is very easy to do and will be greatly appreciated. It would not be hard for you to work for only a few short hours and earn between $ 50 and $100 dollars.

People understand that it is very difficult sometimes when you are in an unfamiliar neighborhood to find a specific house you are looking for only to find there is few or no house numbers in the area to give you even the slightest idea of where to find the right location. Many houses tend to have them hiding in various locations not viewable without moving something. This is where your role comes in. Getting started is quite easy. You need a good set of either hard paper or metal number stencils and a can of quick drying spray paint, black or very dark green would be better. Stick to one color and style unless a special order comes your way! Most painters suggest block-style with 3 or 4 inch numbers being used. Use fast drying paint so that you can do more curbs in a day and potentially earn more money. You may also want a sidewalk gray and white color. Some other items that might be good to have are masking tape and some edging paper. Someone may ask you specifically for a white background. If this happens, simply white-out the numbers you have already painted and redo them. You may also need to get either a stencil holder you make yourself or brass stencils that interlock for special orders that may come your way. These stencil holders should be easy to both use and clean. Remember to paint all the numbers the same size and as close to directly in front of the main entrance of the residence as you possibly can and remember to make sure all numbers are easy to read.

The best way to go for painting the numbers on the curb is to paint first, then go to the door explain what you have done. Ask if they would like to make a contribution to the cost of materials and for the labor you have provided. Do not ask for a set amount. Leave all of that up to them and let them decide. Remember, you are not billing them for your services, just taking donations for your fund. If you ask first they will be more likely to say "no". You will also then have to deal with various laws and regulations because it would then fall under the heading of "contract labor." If you paint first however, you will be a "volunteer." There have been several instances where people who ask first did not make near the amount of money that others who paint first and then ask do. The people that do ask first usually do not stay in this business for very long at all. Be sure to check at the right location as to whether or not you have to have a license or special permit to paint these curbs before you paint them.

By painting the numbers first, rather than asking and then painting, you may also get people who would not normally pay for this otherwise to contribute a little to your funds. These people may include people leasing from someone else, a friend or family member who is only visiting the residence, people who under other circumstances would be too busy to even discuss it, or the person who just happens to not be in too good of humor. The question then is no longer would they like you to do it but rather did you do a good job, thus they will contribute just to let you know that you did in fact do a good job and have done them a special favor.

Special orders may very well come your way. People will decide that what you are doing is good, however they want you to do it a certain way. They may want the style to be a little different or they may want you to use "off the wall" colors. You may even need some more embellished stencils for those who want you to be extraordinarily creative with painting their curb.

Before beginning to paint you must first figure out which numbers go where. Look around for a little bit and it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. Most will go by two's, odds on one side and even on the other.

For curbs you paint for where the people are not home, have something printed up and legible letting them know what you have done for them and include where they can send their donation to. It will not be difficult to have something made up and copied. You could probably get between four and six per sheet of regular paper. Not long after you begin you will get the "hang" of things and figure out that you paint a certain number of curbs, you will earn so many dollars in donations. Because of this you will learn that a few not interested or-------- not being home will not ruin you or break you. If an individual is not interested in contributing, don't fret over it just smile and say thanks anyway. They may have reason to not contribute. These are just part of doing this type of business, it beats having severe debts and bad checks as other businesses do.

Once you get your business up and running smoothly you may need to have some formal business cards printed up or place a few ads in some newspapers. You may also hire a few kids in the neighborhood to hand out flyers announcing that you will be there soon to paint so that they will be aware. If you do this you should include a bit about what they need to do if they do not wish for you to paint their curb at all. This would be a good idea to let people know you are honest and hardworking.

By doing this business it is very important for you to look presentable as you will be visiting several people. Dress according to the neighborhood you are painting in. Do not wear anything that will alarm anyone or turn away the potential donators. Your goal is to appear to be very hardworking and an honest person. Leaving a bad impression on one person could get the whole neighborhood to stirring!
