Why do many people think negatively of MLM companies?
Not everyone is a huge fan of MLM marketing. One is that there seems to be an oversaturation in the marketing community. The idea of MLM sales isn’t new any longer, and in fact, is actually over two decades old. The excitement is gone, as is much of the enthusiasm. The overstimulation in the market can’t always be fixed or redistributed. After all, not everyone who wants the product will actually buy it, and not all who will eventually buy it will do it now and through a discount market or club.
Even if a good product is found, being one of the first to jump on the bandwagon takes a lot of risk, a lot of skill, and a lot of time. This is nothing for the faint of heart, which brings us to the money side.
As with nearly everything in life, questions can be best answered with research. You’ll find all of the information on both the negative and the positive sides of MLM businesses online.
Let’s highlight a few of the major concerns.
1. Pyramid Schemes
You’ve probably heard that pyramid schemes are illegal in the U.S. Well, it’s true. But how are they different from regular, credible MLM companies? Simply put, a pyramid scheme occurs when the concentration is pretty much only on recruiting instead of on actual selling. When finding new people to sell, agent after agent (or distributor) is recruited to sell, but no actual selling goes on. In the end, there’s pretty much no product sold, but the big-wigs at the top of the pyramid end up collecting on signup fees and investments from everyone down below, while those down below simply get let go. It’s a terrible thing to happen, but unfortunately it happens somewhat frequently.
2. The Newness of MLM
MLM marketing is no longer considered new, and thus no real innovations are taking place. These companies can’t claim to be exempt from the normal market rules of selling and promoting. Those that can truly be efficient can succeed, but it’s hard to be profitable, especially on the terms of, “It’s new, so give it time.” MLM has had time to shine and has oftentimes failed.
3. Failure
The people who work the hardest often fail. These distributors, or what you would be (on the bottom level), often slave away trying to do their bosses proud, and end up on the cutting board of a scam or of a company that’s going to just let them go. Yes, some do make money, but a whole lot simply fail. MLM companies in this way tend to exploit the distributors on the bottom, who end up with excess inventory and nothing to do.
4. Oversaturation
The market can only sustain a certain number of similar products, and can only retain interest for some time. Even in this present day, almost everyone has an iPod! Winning one in a raffle is fun, but not as exciting as it was before iPods oversaturated the market. How is Apple combating this? By slowly releasing newer and more advanced products. Movies, internet on the iTouch, applications…they’ve made it so that you NEED to upgrade from your small mp3 player. The problem is that very few companies you work for will have such a great plan of action. Not everyone will want to buy the product, and once people have it, not everyone will want more. An infinite market? It simply doesn’t exist.
5. Greed and Relationships
It’s a sad world indeed when work takes precedence over family. You’ll find many stories that document ruined relationships or friendships due to greed. Even within families, people go nuts trying to earn money.
Many companies are thought of in the negative because they market MLM as being an “American opportunity” or an “American dream.” Well after all, who isn’t interested in earning a load of money with limitless opportunity, a new car, a house, no mortgage, a smiling family, etc. etc.? Everyone wants this, and sneaky companies know that. Unfortunately, due to creating a downline and recruitment, this often gets in the way of relationships. It’s true that the easiest way to build your company is to grab the people who know and trust you, or friends and family. By grabbing them as distributors below you, however, you’re just asking for a mess. Business will most certainly get in the way of you family relationships, so you’ll have to decide if that’s a risk you want to take. If you’re willing to take it, are both you and the other person involved going to be able to put business aside and enjoy time with each other? Think carefully about this one.
People can certainly make money in MLM, but the question to ask is if it’s ethically made. This way of making money behind the backs of people or companies is not generally a proper way to go about making a living, and sometimes it’s downright illegal. Make sure that what you’re doing is fair, to the point, and ethical. Make sure you know your company and that you’re not doing anything that you, as a customer for yourself, wouldn’t appreciate.
It’s clear that many people have a negative view of MLM, and it’s true that many of those reasons may be well founded. It’s up to you to make sure you’re doing the right thing, so make sure you go into it with the facts, knowledge, and research that you need.
