5 reasons why you need a business plan

Every aspiring entrepreneur has big ideas and dreams about their business. But unfortunately, a great majority will never get their business off the ground, or they’ll close up shop within the first few years. In most cases, this is simply because of a lack of concrete planning, resulting in unexpected challenges that cannot be overcome.

This is where a formal business plan or proposal could have helped those entrepreneurs, prepared them for the many obstacles, and possibly saved their business from failing.

If you’re starting your own business, no matter how small, a formal business plan is crucial to your success. Here are 5 reasons why.

1.      You’ll see how much money you need.
Creating a business plan forces you to estimate your expenses and revenue over several years. Often, this is all it takes for a new business-owner to realize just how much they’ll lose in the first few years when there’s not a lot of money coming back in. By creating the plan, you’ll see exactly where you should cut back expenses, so you can have the extra funds to prolong the life of your business in these early stages.

2.      You’ll learn more about the industry.
Part of your business plan should involve extensive research of your competition and the industry itself. This is a great way to see what you’re up against, how much money other companies are making, what they’re doing to succeed, and how you can use some of these strategies to your own advantage. Learning more about your industry should be an ongoing process, but the more you know going into your business, the better chance you’ll succeed.

3.      You’ll be ready if you need a loan.
If you plan on getting a loan from the bank, you will absolutely need a professional business plan. Even if you don’t have an immediate need for financial assistance, it’s a good idea to create the business plan ahead of time, so it’s ready if/when you decide to get a loan.

4.      You’ll be prepared for growth.
For new business-owners, it might sound weird to say, “I wasn’t prepared to grow so fast!” because growth is generally a great thing. But if your business experiences growth too quickly, when you’re not prepared for it, then the business itself risks collapse. Creating your business plan will allow you to estimate your rate of growth so you can be prepared with more resources, technology, or whatever else you’ll need when your business takes off.

5.      You’ll know your business inside and out.
One thing you’ll experience often as a new business-owner is a lot of people asking you about the details of your business, how it works, what you do, and so on. You’ll get these questions a lot, not just from customers, but friends and family. In order to look professional, it’s important to be expert about your business and show that you know it more than anyone else. Creating a business plan will force you to think hard about your business and really scrutinize the inner workings.
